Modal Calculus of Illocutionary Logic

The aim of illocutionary logic is to explain how context can affect the meaning of certain special kinds of performative utterances. Recall that performative utterances are understood as follows: a speaker performs the illocutionary act (e.g. act of assertion, of conjecture, of promise) with the illocutionary force (resp. assertion, conjecture, promise) named by an appropriate performative verb...

LOGIC WITHOUT TRUTH Buridan on the Liar

Stephen Read's criticism of Buridan's solution of the Liar Paradox is based on the charge that while this solution may avoid inconsistency, it does so at the expense of failing to provide a theory of truth. This paper argues that this is one luxury Buridan's logical theory actually can afford: since Buridan does not de ne formal consequence in terms of truth (and with good reason), his logic si...

Turning the Liar paradox into a metatheorem of Basic logic

We show that self-referentiality can be formalized in Basic logic by means of a new connective: @, called "entanglement". In fact, the property of non-idempotence of the connective @ is a metatheorem, which states that a self-referential sentence loses its own identity. This prevents having self-referential paradoxes in the corresponding metalanguage.

The Liar in Context

About twenty-five years ago, Charles Parsons published a paper that began by asking why we still discuss the Liar Paradox. Today, the question seems all the more apt. In the ensuing years we have seen not only Parsons’ work (1974), but seminal work of Saul Kripke (1975), and a huge number of other important papers. Too many to list. Surely, one of them must have solved it! In a way, most of the...
